Beau Johnston is the new Pleasant Grove Elementary School Principal

Beau Johnston

After two years working as the assistant principal at Pleasant Grove, Beau Johnston has been chosen to lead the elementary school following the retirement of Melissa Whicker.

“I am honored and thrilled to fulfill the role as the leader of Pleasant Grove Elementary,” he said. “The tradition of excellence at this school speaks for itself and I feel that I am up for the challenge to continue with the academic success as well as educating the whole child.”

Johnston has seen a smooth transition since he was allowed the time to build relationships/trust with the staff, students, parents, and community of PGE.

“Educating kids while building positive relationships has always been my passion,” he noted. “In these past two years, I have learned that I am able to have a great impact by helping our students build a solid educational foundation and increase their love for school. I want every child to feel that they are part of the PGE family and that they want to be active in their school.”

In the short term, Johnston wants to look toward ensuring all students grow by increasing student achievement, continue putting safety as a top priority working with the East End Schools on vertical alignment.

Further down the educational pathway, he wants to increase options for students during their ‘What I Need Time,’ continue and expand community partner ties, and continue the growth for all teachers, staff, and leadership team.

“We will continue to support our students and push them to new levels of growth,” Johnston said. “Our staff is one of the best and I am very lucky to be a part of PGE!”

He feels one of the biggest challenges educators face today is ensuring students are in a safe and secure environment so that they can all learn.

“ We need to be sure all students have the materials that they need to be successful while also giving them an environment in which they feel confident to take risks and make mistakes,” Johnston said. “This also includes ensuring that our building is secure and all of our staff, parents, and community know that safety will always be a top concern of mine. At PGE we will continue to focus on educating the whole child in a safe and nurturing environment.”

Johnston taught in the business department for 10 years at Bullitt Central High School prior to joining the Pleasant Grove staff. He coordinated stakeholder meetings driven to increase student achievement towards college/career readiness, advocated for the department regarding resources, professional development, and data driven instruction and lead discussions on program review and took notes for administration on next steps.

Johnston earned a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Business Administration from the University of Louisville in 2006 followed by Masters of Arts in teaching from U of L in 2008. In 2011, he completed a Masters of Business Administration from Morehead State University. Most recently, he earned Educational Specialists in Administration in 2017 from Bellarmine University.

“For those who do not know me, the most important thing to me is my family,” he said. “My wife, Brittany, and I celebrated our 10-year anniversary and have 2 children; Brinley (5) who will enroll as a kindergartner in BCPS schools while Braylon (3) will continue going to the zoo, science center, and Kentucky Kingdom. I am an avid U of L fan and in my limited spare time I like to work on my golf game.”
