2019-2020 Dress Code

2019-20 Overdale Elementary Student Dress Code

The goal of our school dress code is to ensure students are comfortable while being safe and appropriate.  All students have the responsibility to observe basic expectations of cleanliness and grooming.  Each student is expected to dress in a manner that is appropriate for school-aged children and does not disrupt the educational process or create safety concerns.

Overdale Elementary has updated our dress code.  Students will no longer be required to wear school uniforms.

Specific Dress Code Requirements:

  • Footwear must be secure to the student's foot at all times.  Footwear with heels must be less than 1" in height.  Wheeled footwear or sandals/shoes without secure heel straps are not permitted.  Athletic shoes must be worn to P.E.

  • Shirts appropriate for school-aged children are permitted.  Shirts such as sleeveless t-shirts, spaghetti strapped, mesh/jersey/sheer, low-cut, or midriff showing shirts/tops are not permitted.  A coverup or a sleeved undershirt must be used if the attire does not include sleeves.  Overdale T-shirts will be available for purchase in the bookstore.
  • Pants/Shorts/Skirts must be of appropriate size, length, and fit.  Shorts and skirts must come to the fingertip of the student when holding their arms down by their sides.  Pants may not be excessively baggy or sit below the waist.  Tight fitting pants/bottoms are not permitted unless it includes a shirt that comes to the fingertips or is accompanied with shorts/skirts.
  • Clothing with holes/tears are not permitted.
  • Hairstyles shall not disrupt student learning.  Any student hairstyle that creates a distraction through style or color will receive a parent phone call to have the hairstyle/color fixed and not permitted back at school until it is corrected.
  • Hats/Caps/Scarves/Bandannas/Coverings are not permitted.  Hoods on jackets, sweatshirts, etc. may not be worn in the building.
  • Makeup and/or face paint is not permitted at school.
  • Clothing and accessories  (jewelry, fashion accessories, etc.)  that cause a distraction, as determined by school staff, are not permitted.
  • All student attire must be free of inappropriate or suggestive language.  Attire that advertises drugs, tobacco, alcohol, obscenities, violence, and/or gangs is not permitted.

Exceptions to the dress code may include school sponsored events such as hat day or other special dress days.  Regardless of the type of day, safety and school-defined appropriateness will be expected.

School administration is authorized to take action where a student's attire does not meet the requirements set forth by the school.

Repeated offenses to our dress code will result in the following consequences:

  • 1st offense: Teacher will notify home explaining the dress code violations.  Appropriate clothing will be given to the student to change into (provided FRC has the appropriate sized clothing).
  • 2nd offense: Phone call from school.  Parent must bring appropriate clothing to change into.
  • 3rd offense: Students will be given detention and the parents will have a meeting with school administration.
