Digital Citizenship

BCPS Library Media Specialists, in collaboration with teachers and administrators, teach digital citizenship skills through project-based learning.  Our media specialists have been trained to be the liason in their respective school.  All BCPS students, faculty, and staff are required to sign an "Acceptable Use Policy" outlining their responsibility as a "digital citizen."

  • Digital citizenship is defined as the norms of appropriate, responsible behavior with regard to technology use.

  • By embracing technology and encouraging students to explore its various forms, educators also have a responsibility to teach students to use technology in a responsible manner.

Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship

  1. Digital Access - full electronic participation in society
  2. Digital Commerce - buying and selling online
  3. Digital Communication - electronic exchange of information
  4. Digital Literacy - knowing when and how to use technology
  5. Digital Etiquette - understanding appropriate and inappropriate uses of technology
  6. Digital Law - legal rights and restrictions governing technology use
  7. Digital Rights and Responsibilities - privileges and freedoms extended to all technology users, and the behavioral expectations that come with them
  8. Digital Health and Wellness - elements of physical and psychological well-being related to digital technology use
  9. Digital Security - precautions that all technology users must take to guarantee their personal safety and the security of their network

**Parents-Quick Cyber-Safety Tips**

  1. Make sure your child does not spend all of his/her time on the computer. People, not computers, should be their best friends and companions.
  2. Teach them never to meet an online friend offline unless you are with them.
  3. Teach them what information they can share with others online and what they can't (like telephone numbers, address, their full name and school).
