High School Musicians Selected for 2019 KMEA All-State Band and Orchestra

High School Musicians

Seven high school musicians auditioned and qualified for the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) All-State Band and Orchestra Concert in February.

Bullitt East High School will be represented by Maaike van der Veer (Flute); Ashley Campbell (Clarinet); Austin Lucas (Tenor Sax); Michael Coleman (French Horn); Owen Parrish (Trombone); and Patrick Mahoney (Euphonium).

North Bullitt High School’s Mackenzie Conn will represent the Eagles as she performs on the Oboe.

Bullitt East Director of Bands Trevor Ervin described the process…

“In mid-November, thirteen KMEA districts host the first round of All-State auditions in their respective districts,” he said. “We are in District 5, which includes seven counties (Spencer, Bullitt, Anderson, Oldham, Henry, Trimble, and Shelby).

“Our first round of auditions hosted over 300 students - 90 of which were selected to move on to the second round. Those 90 were then invited to audition at the second-round of auditions, which included every district in the state, at John Hardin High School. In total, over 1,000 students from across the state auditioned to be a part of the all-state band.”

Ervin delved deeper in what is required for a musician to earn a spot on the all-state band.

“The audition process involves several unique measures of musical proficiency - first, the students must play two etudes, then they must play two major scales (chosen by the judges), followed by a sight-reading excerpt,” he said. “Students are scored in each of these categories (tone, pitch, rhythm, musicality, etc.), and the students with the highest scores in the state are selected to be a part of the All-State Band.”

After making the cut, students invest many hours preparing for the performance.

“The students will rehearse for eight hours a day with nationally-renowned conductors,” Ervin said.

The All-State Band/Orchestra event takes place at the Galt House in Louisville from Wednesday, February 6th to Saturday, February 9th with a culminating performance on Saturday afternoon at the Kentucky Centers for the Arts in Whitney Hall.
