2020 Secondary Schools STEM Challenge

Secondary Schools STEM Challenge

Creating a balloon car was the objective of the 2020 district secondary school STEM Challenge hosted by Zoneton Middle School.

Teams of middle and high school students were given specific resources such as cardboard, a water bottle, balloons, wheels, scissors, tape, etc. and had two hours to design and build a balloon car in which the wheels must turn and it had to move down a straight blue line.

No parental assistance was provided. The teams also had to document their project (which was half the overall score).

Judges monitored team progress and took notes from students as they created and then tested their respective vehicles.

Family members were allowed to watch as each team had one opportunity to test their balloon cars.

The results were interesting. Most moved forward only to veer off the blue line of tape. One car barely nudged past the starting line. Another car actually moved backwards.

Results from the challenge are:

Middle School Division First Place – Eastside Middle School students Laryssa Nickell, Ethan Popplewell, Kahlyn Mattingly and Maddie Wheeler. Coordinator Melissa Hightower.
