District Supervisor of Social Services Erin McGohon has been selected to serve on the Kentucky Association of School Social Workers (KASSW) board.
“I’m really excited to get more involved in advocating for school social work and collaborating with others across the state,” she said.
She will participate in board meetings to discuss various topics such as the current legislative session, the fall conference, and other areas of interest or concern.
McGohon is responsible for contacting regional school social workers to assess needs and inform of KASSW activities.
“I am also expected to explore various agencies, schools, treatment facilities, colleges, etc., to pass out information about school social work and KASSW,” she said adding she is also on the conference committee helping organize the fall conference.
In researching legislative action for her new duties, McGohon said Senate Bill (SB) 8 (formerly SB1 - the School Safety and Resiliency Act) is a hot topic.
“I feel it is important to share the needs of Bullitt County Public Schools with the KASSW Board,” she affirmed. “Many of our members lobby in Frankfort during the entire session so it’s important that we have a voice at the table.”
She feels collaborating with social workers across Kentucky will generate strategies to work with student needs.
“Because school social work looks different across the state, it’s nice to hear about what other districts are doing,” she said.
McGohon believes that the biggest challenge social workers face today is being utilized as a valuable member of the school mental health team. School social workers are licensed and/or certified mental health professionals who work in conjunction with the school counselor and the school psychologist to help eliminate barriers that prevent a student from being academically successful.
“School social workers are an invaluable link between the student, family, school and community,” she said.
KASSW members will attend and speak at conference committee meetings. The board also has a lobbyist to help advocate for the school social work profession.
McGohon and District Supervisor of Social Services Susan Bibelhauser have both served on the KASSW board.
