PBIS encourages positive behavior expectations

At North Bullitt, we value not only our students' education, but their growth as future community members with an impact on society. We reflected on our expectations for ourselves and what we believe should be passed down to the future generations, and created the acronym SOAR. Our classroom and school-wide expectations are tied into these core beliefs. 

S - we value SAFETY

O - we take OWNERSHIP

A - we show ACCEPTANCE

R - we give RESPECT

In order to meet the SOAR expectations, we utilize a program called PBIS Rewards, which stands for Positive Behavior Intervention Systems. We are able to use PBIS to make data informed decisions about how to target student behavior -- what encourages and nurtures positive behavior, what causes disruptions in students’ learning, as well as analyzing other positive and negative reinforcements. PBIS categorizes behaviors into three tiers, with the goal of setting behavior expectations to keep the majority of students in the first tier. PBIS encourages schools to have 4-5 positively stated behavioral expectations, which is where SOAR comes from. 

Taylor Wilson, PBIS Coach, used PBIS to analyze students’ behavior when we switched over from in-person to a virtual learning environment: “We noticed that our behavior incident trends were centered around student inactivity. Using our SOAR expectations as a guide, we have asked our teachers to focus on the ‘ownership’ component. At this time, our staff is working to regularly reward students for showing ownership.” Students can meet this expectation during remote learning by doing the following: 

  • Reporting to class Zoom meetings

  • Being on time and prepared

  • Being present and actively engaged

  • Completing assignments

  • Asking peers/teachers for help

Through PBIS Rewards, students have the opportunity to earn points from their teachers when they meet expectations we have set. Previously, students have been able to redeem their points for prizes, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will be using a raffle system for the 2020-2021 rewards. At the end of each month, students will spend their points to enter an electronic raffle for prizes of their choosing. The point system will start over each month and we will add new prizes. 

To encourage SOAR across the school, there is also a new month point goal for students. All students who meet the monthly goal will be entered into a separate drawing for a very large prize. For September, the point goal is 50 -- with the prize being an Apple watch! Other prizes include North Bullitt spirit wear, Bluetooth earbuds, tumblers, and gift cards galore.
