Spring is upon us, and what better way to celebrate than planting a garden? BC students have been working within the greenhouse for the past couple of months, growing tons of plants like Boston ferns, wave petunias, begonias, lantana, geraniums, tomatoes, and peppers. These plants will be on sale April 24 at BC’s greenhouse.
Students selected plants they wanted to grow and studied propagation techniques before planting seeds. Students then were able to apply their class knowledge to the planting within the greenhouse, and they even developed a growing schedule. Students started planting in early February.
Students Hannah Huffman and Joelynn Raley were incredibly involved in the planting of the greenhouse, and even created a promotional video for the greenhouse opening, which is included in this article.
“Our greenhouse class allows us to go outside, get our hands dirty, and most importantly get experience,” says Hannah. “The greenhouse class teaches you everything you need to know about plants, fertilizing, and what it’s like working in a greenhouse. All of these things are important when going into a greenhouse career, or just wanting to grow your own plants.”
“The greenhouse class benefits students by giving them a chance to walk around and learn hands-on,” adds Joelynn. “In many other classes, kids don’t get to do this, so it is a fun opportunity for them. The greenhouse class also teaches students about different plants that are interesting and keeps students’ attention.”
Community support and interaction is incredibly important to us here at BC. When our students graduate, they will be active members within their community, and that practice of support and interaction starts now.
“It is really exciting for students to watch parents and grandparents come in and see what the students have been growing,” says teacher Mr. Justin Peake. “It gives us a chance to share and listen. I talk with students about the importance of having a good work ethic and being able to follow directions; the greenhouse gives us an authentic opportunity to practice what we preach.”
The BC greenhouse would like to keep an open dialogue with the community. We encourage you to come out and see what the students have been up to this year during our greenhouse sale.
The greenhouse will be open for sale on April 24 from 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM.
