Hebron MS Speech Team finishes 9th in the state

Hebron MS

Hebron Middle School is leading the renaissance reemergence of speech in BCPS. Discovery School Teacher and Speech & Debate Coach Woody Zorn is excited to report the launch of the first speech team in Bullitt County since the mid-90s.

For the past four years, Coach Zorn has been working to build a solid base of student speech participants; in that time, Hebron’s speech team overcame obstacles, including a year of remote learning within a pandemic.

“In this crazy year, we managed to have a record-setting year,” Coach Zorn states. “At the Kentucky High School Speech League (KHSSL) virtual regional tournament, we won the Louisville Regional Championship, beating teams like Kentucky Country Day and Bardstown Middle School.”

Hebron Regional Champions are:

  • Crystal Zheng, extemporaneous speaking and impromptu

  • Alexis Chwistek, dramatic interpretation

  • Mia Werkmeister, declamation

Runner-ups include:

  • Crystal Zheng, oratory

  • Savannah Ballard, humorous interpretation

  • Luke Smith, impromptu

  • Jack Binkley, dramatic interpretation

Hebron advanced to the State Tournament, where nine students advanced to the Semi-Final Round of eighteen competitors. These nine students are:

  • Crystal Zheng: extemporaneous speaking, impromptu, oratory

  • Mia Werkmeister: dramatic interpretation and declamation

  • Alexis Chwistek: dramatic interpretation and prose

  • Jack Binkley: dramatic interpretation

  • Samantha Bowling: prose

Crystal individually finished fifth overall, and Hebron finished ninth in the state, their first top ten finish.

“The fact we have gone from no program to a top ten finish at State in only four years is a testament to the hard work of our students,” Coach Zorn says. “Whether it is working on a character or line delivery for interpretation events, or researching and staying up on current events for extemporaneous speaking, they did it all, and they did it virtually.”

Congratulations to our Hebron MS Speech Team for their success!
