Bullitt Alternative Center's Emily Norton has Poem Published

BAC Teacher and Poet Emily Norton

Penning poetry is an outlet for Emily Norton.

The Bullitt Alternative Center EBD teacher has been writing her thoughts in general since middle school and took a serious turn to poetry about four years ago.

Her most recent poem, Black Swan, has made it to print through Eber & Wein Publishing.

“This is my first poem to be published but I hope there are many more,” Emily said adding she submitted many works that were ultimately rejected.

“But I never gave up,” she said.

Black Swan delves into some of Emily’s personal struggles with mental illness.

“This is why I’m so passionate about working with kids who struggle with similar issues to show them that they can get through those tough times,” Emily affirmed. “Poetry is a way for me to express myself and it’s also has been a way for me to cope.”

Black Swan

Time has passed

But not much has changed

These thoughts have harassed

And made me enraged

They go round and round

And seem to prevail

The thoughts and the sound

I seem to wait

The meds may diminish

The meds may aid

They say I should finish

But I still feel afraid

Nowhere to flee

Nowhere to hide

     But to its decree

I just sit back and ride

With little control

I try to go on

Inside this dark hole

I wait for the next black swan
