2019-2020 ACT Scores reveal great gains for the district

The District Director of Assessment, Data, and Research, Ms. Jan Stone, and Assistant Superintendent of Student Learning Ms. Adrienne Usher, recently presented the district and high school ACT scores. Both educators noticed gains across the board in all subject areas.

As seen below, each area of the ACT (English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and the Composite) all went up between 0.3-0.7 points. The national average ACT composite scores declined from 20.7 to 20.6, the lowest level the national composite has been at in ten years, partially due to the impacts on education that COVID-19 has caused. While BCPS is a couple points behind the national average, we are confident to see that we did gain points in all areas, even through a difficult learning year.

The ACT’s College Readiness Benchmarks are the minimum ACT test scores required for students to have a high probability of success in credit-bearing college courses. Below is a chart detailing the minimum ACT test score for each category.

As with the ACT composite scores, the national average percent for students meeting college benchmarks has also declined. According to the National ACT 2019 report, the percentage of students meeting at least three of the four ACT College Readiness Benchmarks was 37 percent, down from 38 percent in 2018. Slightly higher percentages of students are also showing little preparedness for college coursework: 36 percent of 2019 graduates met none of the ACT benchmarks, compared to 35 percent of students in 2018.

BCPS students have again succeeded in gaining percentage points in this area. The percentage of high school students meeting college benchmarks revealed great gains, by 2-9 percent.

“The district is definitely closing the gap, and there are a lot of great things going on,” Ms. Stone remarks.
