Natalie Jones Wins Cinemania Virtual State Championship for PGE

Natalie Jones

Kentucky Cinemania is a 48 hour state-wide student video competition for STLP (student technology leadership program) participants and this year it went virtual.  Double top secret elements were released on April 27th.  From that point, students had only 48 hours to: think, collaborate, write, design/plan, brainstorm, write some more, shoot, re-write again, edit, produce and distribute a final product to be judged.

According to Alison Egan, Librarian and STLP coordinator, “the STLP students were disappointed that the State competition at Rupp Arena was cancelled.  They were really looking forward to working on Cinemania and other events together.  We have competed in this event and have had a blast working on it every year since we won the State Championship in 2015.”

“Cinemania was one of the events that offered a virtual option, but I wasn’t sure if we would be able to compete.  With the social distancing guidelines in place, I knew it would be very challenging to work on a video with a large group virtually.  Instead, I challenged the STLP students to submit an individual video using each of the elements and ONE winner would be chosen and entered into the state competition to represent PGE.  This was an optional activity, so I wasn’t sure if anyone would rise to the challenge.  I was pleased to have video submissions from Natalie Jones, Taylor Hood, Nora Bacon and Alyssa Rupe.  They each found a unique way to incorporate the elements into a story.  Taylor Hood had technical excellence with effective use of special effects, titles and voiceover and a really cute story, so it was extremely difficult to pick a winner.  Natalie’s creativity in script writing and audience appeal couldn’t be ignored, and ultimately, her video was chosen to represent Pleasant Grove at the state level.”

Since April 29th, Natalie had been eagerly awaiting the results of the competition.  After checking the Cinemania website numerous times, Mrs. Egan finally reached out to the Cinemania director and learned that winners were announced as part of the (recorded) State STLP event and offered a link to the winners.  “I clicked the link and scrolled down and was surprised and thrilled to see Pleasant Grove Elementary listed as the winner for Cinemania K-5 division,” recalls Egan.  “I couldn’t wait to talk to Natalie and she was very excited when she found out.  Natalie is an incredible student and always goes above and beyond.  I was so proud of her and all of the participants for their dedication, hard work and creativity.”
