ALE at HMS

At Hebron Middle School, students are engaging in authentic learning experiences that go beyond the classroom walls. Recently, students in Mrs. Hutchin's writing class took their learning to the next level by organizing a health fair as part of the larger Student Learning Showcase, demonstrating their skills as Effective Communicators, Community Contributors, and Innovative Problem Solvers.

The health fair, led by Mrs. Hutchins' class, was a significant component of the broader Student Learning Showcase, which featured contributions from every teacher and included a variety of student projects. Students in Mrs. Hutchins' class began by writing letters, emails, and other correspondence to invite community partners to participate in the health fair or donate to the event. This hands-on experience not only honed their writing skills but also taught them the importance of effective communication and community engagement.

On the day of the event, students from Mrs. Hutchins’ class worked alongside North Bullitt High School's JROTC students to set up and run the health fair. They also created posters to promote the event and showcase their work. The health fair featured businesses, non-profits, local emergency responders, and The Dream Express (book bus), providing students with the opportunity to learn from and interact with members of their local community.

This Student Learning Showcase was a great way for HMS students to have the chance to share their work with their families and the community.

"The Health Fair and Student Learning Showcase are perfect examples of how authentic learning can empower students to make a positive impact in their community," said Principal Chad Foster. "I am incredibly proud of our students for their hard work, creativity, and dedication to making a difference."

Instructional Coach Katie Cottner added, "The students' involvement in organizing and running the Health Fair and Student Learning Showcase not only highlighted their academic skills but also their ability to collaborate, communicate effectively, and problem-solve. These are essential skills that will serve them well in their future endeavors."

Dr. Jesse Bacon, Superintendent of Bullitt County Public Schools, commented, "These learning events at Hebron Middle School are shining examples of the innovative and impactful projects our students are capable of. By engaging in authentic learning experiences, our students are developing critical skills that will prepare them for success in college, career, and life."

This event was a resounding success as it not only provided valuable learning opportunities for students but also strengthened the school's ties with the community. It is a testament to the power of authentic learning experiences in preparing students for success in the real world.

As BCPS continues to prioritize authentic learning experiences, we look forward to seeing more innovative projects from our students that showcase their skills and talents while making a meaningful impact in the world around them!
