Health Services

The utmost responsibility of the Health Services Department is to provide care and necessary assessment to our BCPS students, which in turn enhances their success in the classroom and in life. As students may experience a variety of different health needs, Health Services ensures each student has access to an established, safe environment to address those needs throughout the school day.

Our staff is trained to handle any medical events or emergencies they may face, and our nurses are made available in-person and over the phone. The Department also works with attendance clerks, the Department of Pupil Personnel, and social workers regarding students with chronic absences, as well as parents/guardians and physicians to develop a medical plan for students with attendance barriers. Additionally, the Department meets specific medical needs, such as carefully tracking insulin intake for diabetic students and communicating with diabetic providers so that students with diabetes can have more “seat-time” in front of a teacher. We work very hard to provide resources and support for our students with medical conditions.  Included on this site are programs and resources that we already have in place to support our students at every level, with respect to every need they have. BCPS does not offer any services related to human sexuality, contraception, or family planning.

“Our Department’s goal is to optimize student health for learning, leading to lifelong success,” states Lesa Howell, Health Services Coordinator. “We emphasize the core value Students Matter Most – we want to make sure all students have the appropriate services in place to support their unique needs to enhance their learning.”
