OTC Meds Update

Dear Families,

We want to make you aware of an important change regarding the administration of over-the-counter (OTC) medications in schools, effective for the upcoming school year.

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) has informed us that schools are no longer permitted to administer any OTC medications without both a parent/guardian’s consent and a signed order from a licensed healthcare provider.

What does this mean for your family?

If you would like your child to have access to OTC medications (provided by the family) during the school day (such as Tylenol, Motrin, cough drops, Desitin, lotion, or anti-itch creams, etc.) you will need to have your child’s physician complete our official medication administration form. This form must also be signed by you as the parent or guardian.

Please note that we can no longer accept a parent-signed 3-day medication form for any OTC medications.

Medication forms are available on our Health Services webpage. If you need a printed copy or assistance accessing the form, please reach out to your school’s front office or health staff. We’re happy to help!

As in previous years, once the forms are completed, a parent or guardian must bring any medication(s) to the office to be checked in and documented with school staff.

We understand this is a change from previous practice and may require additional planning. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support in keeping all students healthy and safe during the school day.

Sincerely,

Kim Willoughby, RN BSN
