🎒 BCPS Kindergarten Readiness: Week 2 🎒
Welcome to Week 2️⃣ of our readiness countdown! One of the most vital ways to prepare your incoming student to be Kinder Ready is by fostering daily independence. School readiness is all about working together to ensure your child enters the classroom ready to thrive, and mastering self-help skills ensures they maximize their valuable learning time!
Before the first bell rings, we can support student independence and help our young learners grow by practicing these essential everyday skills:
▪️Restroom Independence: Nurturing the confidence to handle all basic bathroom needs completely on their own. This is an essential skill for school.
▪️Daily Care: Learning to wash hands thoroughly with soap and practicing how to manage clothing fasteners like buttons, snaps, and zippers.
▪️Focus: Building the stamina to keep attention on a fun task or listen carefully to an adult's instructions for a few minutes.
▪️Task Management: Helping young minds grow by practicing how to follow simple rules and multi-step routines.
💡 Family Tips for Summer Practice:
▪️The Wardrobe Test: Have your child practice wearing their school clothes and shoes. If they can’t unbutton their pants or untie their shoes by themselves, opt for elastic waistbands and Velcro shoes for the first few weeks of school.
▪️Step-by-Step Bathroom Runs: Let your child go to the restroom at home completely unassisted. Remind them of the full routine: flush, wipe, pull up pants, button up, and wash hands with soap.
▪️Routine Building: Practice giving 2-step instructions around the house (e.g., "Please put your shoes away, and then pick up that book").
School readiness is a partnership! Let's Move Forward together. ✨
