Our 5th graders put their fraction skills to the test last week during a visit to the Bullitt East Culinary Department! 👩‍🍳📏 Students applied what they’ve been learning in their fractions unit by following real recipes alongside the culinary team. From adjusting measurements to troubleshooting a few “kitchen math” mix-ups, our students showed true innovative problem-solving as they worked through challenges and made decisions on the fly. Learning becomes even more meaningful when students can see how their classroom skills come to life in the real world. Thank you to the Bullitt East Culinary Department for giving our students such a memorable and delicious learning experience!

Student Shout-Out: Serukiza

We want to give a special shout-out to Serukiza for the incredible growth he has been showing in our classroom! Recently, Serukiza has been taking his learning very seriously and truly demonstrating what it means to be a mastery learner and a self-directed navigator. He listens carefully to feedback, applies it, and uses it to continually improve his work.

Serukiza also shows outstanding character every single day. He is always helping classmates, often stepping in to support others without even being asked. His peers see him as a trusted partner who helps them feel comfortable, confident, and supported while learning. His kindness, leadership, and willingness to help others make our classroom a better place.

One moment that really stood out was when Serukiza shared that he has been practicing Mad Libs at home to work on adjectives and adverbs. That is a great example of taking ownership of learning and going the extra mile to grow!

We are so proud of the effort, responsibility, and positive attitude Serukiza brings to our classroom each day. Keep up the amazing work, Serukiza! 👏📚✨

There is something powerful about a building full of educators learning together. Today during Bullitt Day, the staff at Old Mill leaned into our mission of creating a collaborative and innovative learning environment where all students succeed. Teams refined Student Showcase artifact and feedback protocols, explored immersive experiences through ClassVR, shared engagement strategies from recent conferences, and began planning units that center around authentic storytelling. Every conversation today was grounded in our commitment to the Bullitt County Graduate Profile and preparing students with the skills they need to thrive beyond our classrooms.✨

🎧 Your Roadmap: The Parent Guide – Episode Launch

We are excited to launch our first overview of Your Roadmap: The Parent Guide! This short episode walks families through how parents, school staff, and students work together as a team to turn academic learning into real-world success.

In this episode, we introduce the idea of shared accountability—the partnership between families, students, and educators that supports every child’s growth.

We also break down some of the academic terms you may hear throughout the year. For example:

Evidence of Growth:
This means the specific proof or data that shows your child is improving over time, such as a handwriting sample, writing piece, math work, or reading progress.

Our goal is to make the language we use at school clear, meaningful, and easy for families and students to understand. The glossary in the handbook helps translate school terminology into simple explanations you can talk about together at home.

🌟 Student Spotlight: Nora 🌟

As the oldest of three younger sisters, Nora brings such a beautiful sense of care, compassion, and empathy to our school each day. She naturally looks out for her classmates, making sure they feel safe, well, and like they truly belong at Old Mill.

I especially notice Nora’s intentional kindness after lunchtime. She makes sure her classmates are cleaned up and walks with them to their special area, ensuring everyone is included every step of the way.

Nora shines brightly as a leader in her classroom and throughout our school. She truly embodies what it means to be an amazing Community Contributor.

Go Nora! We are so proud of you! 💛✨

Our 3rd graders recently hosted their Fraction Fair Showcase! Students explored the driving question: What would happen if the world didn’t have fractions? As Self-Directed Navigators, they selected careers and investigated how fractions are used in real life—from farmers and pharmacists to nurses, gamers, and more. During the showcase, students stepped into the role of Effective Communicators and Productive Collaborators, leading hands-on experiences for families and sharing their learning. We are so proud of their hard work and creativity! 💙

✨ Reformers Then & Now in Mrs. Grady’s 5th Grade ✨

Our 5th graders took their learning beyond the classroom by interviewing staff and students about how we practice inclusion at Old Mill today. After studying reformers from the mid-1800s, they connected past movements for equality to the positive changes happening right here in our school.

Authentic learning, meaningful questions, and powerful conversations in action! 💙

🌟 OMES Staff Spotlight: Mrs. Russ 🌟

This week we are excited to shine our Staff Spotlight on Mrs. Russ!

Mrs. Russ, thank you for always supporting students and truly meeting them where they are. You consistently demonstrate that Students Matter Most in everything you do. Your ability to ensure every student feels capable, valued, and successful does not go unnoticed.

I have personally learned so much from you—especially about the importance of helping every child believe they can achieve. Your encouragement has helped me become more mindful of how I accommodate learning and design experiences so all students can thrive. Watching you in action has pushed me to reflect on my own teaching and refine my practice so I can be more intentional with each student who walks into our gym.

Your dedication, heart, and unwavering belief in students make a lasting impact every single day.

Mrs. Russ, you are a rock star! ⭐💛
