MWMS Innovators Renaissance Fair

MT. WASHINGTON, KY — May 23, 2025 — The front lawn of Mt. Washington Middle School was transformed into a vibrant hub of history, innovation, and imagination as 7th-grade students hosted the school’s annual Renaissance Fair, a student-led, interdisciplinary learning experience designed to deepen understanding and spark curiosity about one of the most influential periods in human history.

Through original research and hands-on demonstrations, students explored the advancements of the Renaissance in fields such as history, literature, art, science, and mathematics. From showcasing custom-designed coats of arms to leading interactive probability games and science experiments, students invited visitors into a world of discovery that merged the past with present-day creativity.

“This isn’t just a project. It’s an authentic learning experience that brings our standards to life,” said MWMS teacher Doug Osborne. “Students take ownership of their learning, work together to solve problems, and communicate their ideas with confidence. It’s powerful to watch.”

Real-World Skills, Real-World Learning

Events like the Renaissance Fair exemplify the district’s commitment to authentic learning experiences, a key instructional focus for Bullitt County Public Schools. Rather than passively absorbing content, students at MWMS engaged in deeper learning by applying their knowledge in real-world contexts, requiring them to synthesize information, solve problems, and share their findings with a public audience.

These experiences align closely with the BCPS Graduate Profile, which outlines the six competencies students need to thrive in life after graduation:

  • Innovative Problem Solver

  • Effective Communicator

  • Mastery Learner

  • Productive Collaborator

  • Self-Directed Navigator

  • Community Contributor

From managing their time and researching historical figures to designing interactive displays and fielding questions from guests, MWMS students demonstrated each of these competencies, all while having fun and growing as thoughtful, globally aware citizens.

By encouraging collaboration, embracing differences, and highlighting student voices, the event reflects the district’s mission to inspire and equip every student to succeed in life. Whether designing a game rooted in mathematical probability or showcasing Leonardo da Vinci’s scientific sketches, students connected their academic work to tangible outcomes. It's proof that learning doesn’t just happen in textbooks.

Community Support

The event was open to the public and media, offering parents, community members, and district leaders the opportunity to witness firsthand the energy and excellence that comes from student-driven learning. The turnout was a testament to the community’s investment in student success and innovative education.

Events like the MWMS Renaissance Fair are more than just a celebration. They serve as living proof of a district #MovingForward with purpose, passion, and a commitment to empowering every learner.
