NBHS Ai Spanish Chat Bot

On March 27, 2025, a team of forward-thinking students from North Bullitt High School (NBHS) unveiled a one-of-a-kind project to their school and community: E.A.G.L.E., an artificial intelligence system created entirely by students in the school’s Java Programming I course.

Led by teacher Rob Morrison, the 4th-period class didn’t just dip their toes into AI... they dove in headfirst! After months of research, trial, and perseverance through ten unsuccessful versions, their hard work culminated in the debut of E.A.G.L.E. version 11, with version 12 already in the works. As part of the launch, students demonstrated the AI’s capacity to engage in human-like conversation, offer academic support, and help users learn Spanish, all while showcasing their ability to adapt, iterate, and grow.

“This isn’t just about coding,” said Morrison. “It’s about learning from mistakes, refining your approach, and thinking critically about how technology can serve others.”

The students created a matrix of prompts to assess and compare multiple large language models (LLMs), using the data to refine their final AI design. The system, which now operates within the BCPS network, supports NBHS students and staff by answering questions on topics ranging from homework to current events. Its name, E.A.G.L.E., was even chosen by the AI itself, which is just one example of the creativity students embraced throughout the process.

This student-led innovation not only embodies Proactive Innovation, one of the district’s Core Values, but also shines a spotlight on the Graduate Profile competencies, particularly Innovative Problem Solver, Mastery Learner, and Self-Directed Navigator. From overcoming coding challenges to refining hardware and UI design, NBHS students exemplified what it means to take initiative, embrace feedback, and persist through failure to reach a solution.

“We are proud to celebrate the work of these young creators,” said Dr. Jesse Bacon, BCPS Superintendent. “They are showing us all what it looks like to think big, build boldly, and keep moving forward.”

North Bullitt High School’s student engineers are already planning their next innovation: a second AI to serve additional campus needs. As we look ahead, their work is a bold reminder that when students are given the opportunity to lead, learn, and explore, the possibilities are limitless.
