BMS Project

This past fall, 6th grade students at Bernheim Middle School, led by Mrs. Breeze and Mr. Tingle, set out to make a difference... and they did just that!

Inspired by the Ugandan Water Project, the students launched a fundraising campaign to support the installation of rainwater collection systems in communities where clean water is not readily available. Their goal was simple: take action to help others. The outcome? Nothing short of life-changing.

We’re thrilled to share that the rainwater systems sponsored by Bernheim students and their families have now been completed. Thanks to their generosity and leadership, 197 students and 9 staff members in Uganda now have access to safe, clean drinking water, which is something that didn’t exist before. Bernheim didn’t just raise money; they helped create a sustainable solution to a critical problem.

What This Says About Our Learners

This project is a shining example of our BCPS Graduate Profile in action:

  • Community Contributors: Bernheim students recognized a need beyond their own community and took meaningful steps to make a difference. Their empathy, global awareness, and sense of responsibility speak volumes about the kind of citizens we’re shaping here in BCPS.

  • Self-Directed Navigators: From planning the fundraiser to seeing it through, these students managed their time, set goals, and adapted along the way. Their ownership of this project reflects a strong sense of initiative and follow-through.

  • Effective Communicators & Productive Collaborators: Working in teams, engaging their school community, and spreading awareness, they demonstrated the power of collaboration and the importance of sharing a clear, compelling message.

Way to Go, Bruins!

This project didn’t just teach students about geography, science, or global issues; it taught them how to lead with purpose, work together, and believe in their ability to spark change. Their story reminds us what education is truly about: empowering young people to leave the world better than they found it.

We are incredibly proud of our Bernheim Bruins! This is #BCPSCommunityContributor, #BCPSSelfDirectedNavigator, and #BCPSEffectiveCommunicator in action. This is what it means to be #MovingForward.
