🎨 Teacher Spotlight: Art That Can Be Felt! 🎨

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Tori Christensen, one of our District-Wide Teachers of the Visually Impaired, for her upcoming solo exhibition, "The Colors of Darkness: A Touchable Art Show." 🧶✨

Tori isn't just a dedicated educator at BCPS; she is a talented textile artist whose work bridges the gap between sight and touch. In this special exhibition, she weaves original poems (written in braille using beads!) into beautiful tapestries, making art accessible for everyone, especially those who are blind or visually impaired.

Inspired by her brother’s journey with vision loss, Tori’s work is a powerful example of the passion and expertise our staff brings to our students every day.

📍 Where: The Little Loomhouse (Lou Tate Gallery) 📅 When: Jan 10 – Feb 21 🎟️ Reception: Saturday, Jan 10, 2-4 PM (Free & Open to the Public!)

Let’s show some #BCPS pride and support Ms. Christensen!

🏠 Innovation in Action: BAMS Students Design Portable Homeless Shelters

Huge shoutout to our Bullitt Advanced Math + Science (BAMS) students for their incredible work on the Designing Portable Homeless Shelters project! These young engineers have spent the semester moving from paper-and-pencil blueprints to full-scale construction.

📐 The Engineering Journey
Students didn't just build; they engineered with empathy. Using professional tools like Fishbone Diagrams and CAD modeling, they tackled the harsh realities of survival.

🎯The Goal: Keep occupants dry, warm (above freezing), and safe.

📋The Challenge: Designs had to be lightweight and portable enough for one person to carry.

🛠️ Construction & Testing Day
On December 3rd, students brought their designs to life! From "Accordion" folds to "Origami" cubes, they used a mix of innovative materials:

✅Insulation: Space blankets, bubble wrap, foam spray, and even paper wads to trap body heat.

✅Structure: PVC skeletons, cardboard ribbing, and wire frames designed to withstand wind and snow.

✅Elevation: Using pool noodles or wooden pallets to keep sleepers off the frozen ground.

💡 Real-World Learning
Through feedback sessions with mentors at FirstBuild, students refined their models to prioritize fast setup times and durability. They aren't just learning math and science; they are building solutions for their community.

Congratulations to all the BAMS teams for your hard work and dedication to the project! 👏🌟
